Dog Accessories

Dog ownership carries with it the burden of a number of other purchases. In order to properly care for a dog and to comply with certain local laws, the owner must have a number of dog accessories in his or her arsenal. Some of these items are necessary, others are merely conveniences. It is important to know exactly what you’ll need to properly care for your dog.

The Essentials

Most of the truly necessary items for dog care are fairly obvious. If you’ve got a dog you’ll need bowls for the dog’s food and water. Mid size to large dogs have a habit of moving their food bowls around the room as they eat. This can make a lot of noise and have the frustrating result of requiring the owner to hunt around for the bowl at feeding time. The problem can be solved by using a heavy ceramic bowl that is difficult for the dog to move around. A sturdy plastic bowl with a rubber lining on the bottom can be useful as well. The rubber on the bottom prevents the bowl from sliding around as Rover enjoys his meal.

For taking the dog on walks you’ll need a leash and a collar. These can be as simple or as elaborate as you’d like, but of course you’ll want to take the size and strength of your dog into account when selecting them. The collar can (and should) be adorned with a license tag or at least an ID tag that provides your name and contact information in case your dog is lost.

If you live in a big city like New York (Manhattan), Chicago, or other urban area, you’ll need to purchase that miracle of modern doggie convenience the “pooper scooper.” Most cities have laws against owners simply allowing their dogs to “foul the footpath” or leave little Poodle Bombs all over the city park. In some cities there is a hefty fine for such crappy behavior.

Optional Accessories

There are literally thousands of optional items available for people to purchase for use with their dogs. Some of these items, like the gravity refillable water dishes and food bowls, serve a very useful purpose, others – the dog bandana comes to mind – serve no real purpose and are merely decorative or just plain silly.

One item that some owners do find very useful, especially those that live in a hot climate, are “dog booties.” While they may seem like a simply precocious and relatively useless item, they do a good job of protecting the sensitive pads of a dog’s feet from rough terrain, rocky areas, and hot pavement. Those in cooler climates may not understand, but in some places, particularly the desert environments of cities like Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Albuquerque, the summer pavement can literally become hot enough to fry an egg. You wouldn’t walk barefoot on such a surface and neither should your dog.

Delight Your Dog With A Natural Dog Treat

As dog owners become more aware of their pet's nutritional needs, they increasingly recognize the advantage of providing their pets with natural dog treats.

Natural dog treats contain no added chemical preservatives or fillers, leaving your dog with straight nutritional value, nothing more. Natural treats also use the highest grade of edible products and processing techniques to ensure they’re even fit for human consumption – which who knows, might help if you ever get stuck in a survival situation with your dog! Let's examine a few commercially-available natural dog treats, and then a few treats you might stumble across in your own back yard.

Commercial Natural Dog Treats

As odd as they sound on first blush, pig ears are a natural favorite for many of our furry friends. They contain a reasonable amount of fat, and dogs find the flavor irresistible (much like some humans and pork rinds). Pig ear treats should be baked instead of chemically processed, and should have no added preservatives or coloring agents. Check your package label carefully.

Greenies are another favorite dog treat -- a unique variety that uses chlorophyll to naturally freshen your dog's breath. Greenies contain no preservatives, artificial flavors or extra coloring. Surprisingly enough, dogs love them, and owners swear by them when it comes to sweetening the breath in a safe and healthy way. Chewing these treats has the added benefit of helping to clean your dog's teeth.

Mother Nature's Own Natural Dog Treats

You might be surprised to realize that natural dog treats exist right in your refrigerator, or in your garden. Carrots, apple slices, and celery are all terrific natural dog treats, providing vitamins without added chemical enhancers. Just give these treats a wash before giving them to your dogs. For an extra-special treat, chop up your fruits or veggies, and mix with a dab of peanut butter and a teaspoon or two of raw oatmeal.

Whether commercially manufactured or straight from the garden, natural dog treats are a great way to give your dogs a dash of extra nutrition without any mysterious extras.

How To Pick A Suitable Collar For Your Dog

Dog collars are an important accessory of man’s best friend – they include your dog’s registration tags, ID, and even leads (for leashes). When looking for the right collar for your pet dog, it’s nice to know you have lots of options. Here are some tips to guide your shopping.

You need to find a collar that will fit around your dog’s neck exactly. And as long as this is the case, you can basically choose whatever color, pattern, or style you like.

For small dogs, pick out a collar that is neither too heavy nor too light. For puppies, a thin, leather collar or a soft, nylon collar is ideal. As for bigger, stronger dogs, wider and heavier collars are best. To make sure that a collar is the right fit on your dog, make sure you can squeeze at least two fingers in between the dog’s neck and the collar. It should be a tight squeeze though, as you don’t want to the collar to be too loose. Finally, you will want to cut off the excess length of strap because otherwise, the dog might chew it.

A snap-on type fastener is the most common replacement for buckle collars, because it makes for easy adjustment of a collar’s length. As for choke collars, they are cool looking but shouldn’t be used on younger puppies – gentler, training collars are better.

Moreover, leather collars are long-lasting and are naturally softened by the oils of a dog’s skin and they come in a variety of styles, widths, and colors. Nylon collars are washable and durable and are perfect for dogs that like to swim and for smaller dogs and puppies that need a softer touch. For bigger dogs, a nylon collar is okay, but it will need to be one with heavy webbing.

There are other collars that suit very specific kinds of dogs. For surfers, there are collars that are made out of the same material as wetsuits! And for those impatient dogs that pull on your leash during walks, head collars are the best option and are often used in training. A harness can come in handy with an anxious or hyperactive dog as well, as it is positioned around the dog’s chest and ribcage to prevent choking – some harnesses even allow you to buckle your dog into your car!

There are all sorts of colors and patterns to choose from and most collars come with matching leashes. Because it is important for your dog to feel as comfortable as possible, put careful time and consideration into your search for the perfect collar.

3 easy to teach dog tricks

To teach your dog tricks even easy ones you need to have some small reward treats, be in a quiet suitable place and keep the training sessions to 10 - 15 minutes or your dog will start to get board, remember when he gets something right lots of praise and a reward treat, just be careful not to get him over excited or he will loose concentration.

Getting your dog to give you his paw, first get your dog to sit, then as you say the word 'paw' take your dogs paw in your hand, give the dog a treat, repeat this, after a few times do not take his paw so quickly, say the word, count to one then take it, you should notice he is bringing his paw up as you say the word if he does not go back to saying it at the same time, do it a few more times then slow your response again. After 2 or 3 sessions most dogs pick this one up quite happily.

The high five, like a lot of tricks the high five is a progression of an earlier trick, in this cast the paw trick. Hold a treat in your fingers and raise your hand slightly higher than you would for the paw trick. You dog will think you want to do the paw trick and will reach for the treat with his paw as we taught him earlier, as he reaches up you say “high five” and give him the treat. Once your dog has mastered the paw trick this one should be very easy to learn and with just a few sessions he will be doing it on hand signal rather than voice control.

Getting your dog to jump through a hoop, before you start this one I would just like to ask you to be a little sensible and not hold the hoop too high as you do not want your dog to heart himself while doing the trick. Sit your dog on one side of a hoola hoop, get the dogs attention on your hand on the other side of the hoop take a treat in your hand and give the dog the command to release him from the sit, at first he may attempt to go around or under the hoop, if this happens start again, your dog wants the treat and will soon learn that going around or under does not get it so he will soon start going through it, when he does say hoopla and give him the treat. He will soon be jumping through the hoop on the command of hoopla. When I started doing this trick I had a medium sized dog (a Labrador) so I started with the hoop 6 inches from the ground and slowly raised it to waist height, if you have a smaller dog you might want to start with the hoop touching the ground so the dog just goes through the hoop and then slowly raise it as he gets used to the trick.

How to Take Care of your Dog

The Bond that can come between a person and a dog can be extremely strong, especially if that bond had been strengthened living with each other for many years, I have personally cried after loosing our family dog that had been like a best friend to me from my birth till I as 15 years old, when he was hit by a car one morning.

Dogs serve many different needs for people. Some people get a dog because they are lonely and need a loyal friend or because they want a dog to protect the home. A dog that is taken good care of and given attention to regularly will give his life to help protect his home and his owner. For the blind a dog can be a pair of eyes to help them get around and for the police a dog can be an important tool and a loyal partner, with a nose that nothing can beat.

The first thing you need to know about taking care of a dog is that dogs need lots of exercise. This is the same for large dogs and small dogs. All dogs need to be let out at least once every 8 hours and should given at least a 20 minute walk to give the dog some fresh air, exercise and a chance to relieve themselves.

It is also important to play with the dog on a regular basis. This can mean going to the park on a weekend or day off and having a good game of fetch, tossing the ball around in your back yard or just wrestling on the ground with the dog, just make sure if you are ruff housing with a little dog that you don’t accidentally hurt the dog. Playing with the dog for a half hour a day, is not only good for the dogs physical health but a dig that is played with regularly is mentally healthier and less likely to become a depressed dog, it also lowers your blood pressure as well and it will form an unbreakable bond between you and your pooch, which will extend to your family if you should start having one after having the dog.

What you feed your dog is very important to the dogs continued good health. The better dog foods will be marked for what are groups the food is appropriate for. Younger dogs need certain vitamins and minerals in larger amounts then an adult dog, and the same goes for an elderly dog they need more calcium in their food to help protect their bones and joints. Feeding your dog the wrong food can stunt the dog's growth and opens the dog to a larger risk of surgery when they are older.

Just like a person a dog should be taken to the veterinarian's office every 6 months, and must receive their shots every year. Regular checkups and vaccinations will also help assure that your dog grows to be an old happy dog.

The Idiot's Guide On How You Can Stop Your Dog From Barking

Tips on How To Stop Your Puppy from Barking

To stop a dog from barking it is best to start with your puppy and to stop the puppy barking before it becomes a real problem and harder to solve. Many things cause a puppy barking as we have addressed elsewhere. You should decide just how much barking you do want and at what. Mold your puppy's behavior toward this goal.

For instance, perhaps you wish your puppy to announce visitors. First decide what words you will use to acknowledge your puppy barking at visitors or more precisely, to announce your visitors. Perhaps it could be a simple "Who's there?" or "Who is it? phrase. Whatever you choose, as with all things in puppy training, remain consistent and train your family to use the exact same phrase as well.

Your visitor approaches the house and your puppy begins barking. Allow your puppy to bark a few times. You say, "Who's there?" and acknowledge your visitor. Now you must distract your puppy if he continues to bark. As soon as he stops barking, you should praise him so he knows that now is the right time to stop barking. That's the key - to be able to stop your puppy barking when you want him to stop.

What distraction should you use? This will depend upon you but one suggestion is a treat, especially for an eight-week-old puppy. Wave it quietly under his nose until he quiets down. You may find you yourself must become very quiet and still as well.

Praise him after he is quiet a few seconds and reward him. You may use something else such as a chew toy for the distraction. Whatever you use to distract him, be aware like all things during puppy training, you will repeat and repeat this scenario. Toddlers are not able to do things exactly right the first time you show them and neither will a puppy be able to do it absolutely correct from the first instance.

If your puppy continues barking, he may need a stronger distraction. Some trainers swear by a set of keys jangling together. Another noisy distraction can be some pennies in an empty soda can with the hole taped shut. Shake it so as to startle the puppy barking.

To stop a puppy barking, you simply must add this training to your other puppy training and be prepared to continue for some duration. It may seem like a hassle to go through all this training, but think how wonderful it will be for you and your neighbors to have a puppy, and then a dog, that you control and make into an excellent companion for all his remaining years.

Barking: How to Get Your Dog to Quiet Down

Are you tired and sick hearing your dog bark every day? Do you want to reduce this habit of your dog? Well, I might have some solution to your problem.

You see my dogs do bark before but when I applied this information I’m giving you, my wonderful friend reduced its barking drastically.

If Your Like most dog owners One of the most annoying is how to deal with excessive barking.
These tips will show how to eliminate the barking of your dog.

Consistent training - The most basic and easiest way to control your dog barking is to make the dog to correlate the "stop barking rule with pleasure and silence.
This can be done by consistent training and begin with preparing many tasty treats like pieces of cheese and other dog snacks. The dog will smell, lick, and then eat the treat first and will keep quiet in the next few seconds.

Provide Entertainment - Sometimes, dog barks when they feel bored at home.
Provide your dog a little bit of entertainment by using the Kong toys. These toys can be stuffed in your dog's food and snacks which will provide hours of fun for your pet.
Also, you can try hiring a pet sitter to play with your dog.

Eradicate the Separation Anxiety - The common reason of dog's excessive barking is the separation anxiety and this needs to be stopped before your neighbors get mad.

Frustration barking- Confined dogs can quickly become frustrated by people on the other side of a fence or beyond the reach of their leash. This sort of barking can be corrected by bringing your dog inside or providing a kennel area shielded from view of the sidewalk.

All of these tips can be successful, but don't expect miracles overnight.

The most common reasons why dogs bark: - Territorial or protective defense - Distress vocalizations due to fear or separation anxiety - Excitement or greeting - During play - To gain attention or to make requests - Frustration - Socially facilitated barking hearing other dogs bark - Compulsive behavior.

Simple Dog Grooming Tips

Tips To A Good Grooming For Your Dog

When you take your dog to the shop for grooming make sure that you explain what you have been doing to
the groomer.

The early groomings will reflect on your dog and how it reacts to groomingfor the rest of it's life. Make sure that the people at your local grooming shop are never ina hurry hurry, and always want to talk to you. if they are none of these better look for another grooming shop that are ready and are willing to listen and to you.

You want one that not only knows how to groom but is kind to you and your pet. If they cannot take that time then chances are once you are out of sight they will rush it on through.
If possible use groomers that have double sided mirror, this way you can see how how your dog is being done while  you dog won't see you

Grooming for Allergies- Tips
1)There are several shampoo, air freshener, vacuum clearer, brush, or other miracle product that would help our friends to be comfortable in our home

2)Take your dog out to the yard to brush and comb her out, also use with a rake and brush and comb her again. She'll be more or less shed free for a day then.

3)There is something called a furminator that many grooming salons now use. I think it is sort of a combination brush and vaccuum cleanerit also help to reduce shedding.

4)There is something called Allerpet that you put on your hands and then rub your pet down with. I know people with allergies and asthma who live with pets use this product.

5)You can also vaccuum very well right before your friends come over and air filters/purifiers are great too.

6) Finally go for allergy test you to know the number you are on a 1 to a 4. I am a 2 on dogs and cats (4 is the highest)

Many people have never been tested and they just THINK they are allergic!

Homemade Dog Food Will Save Your Dog's Life

The recent dog food and pet food recall that has claimed the lives of dogs across the United States as a result of eating contaminated commercial dog food tainted with aminopterin, a rat poison, and melamine, a chemical used in making plastics and fertilizer. As a result many dog owners considering homemade dog food as a safe and nutritious alternative for their dog.

In a recent news article, a law professor states that little change is anticipated ( in the dog food industry) after the current onslaught of dog food recall news and attention subsides.

The probable reason for this conclusion is that there are insufficient financial resources and manpower to effectively monitor and regulate the dog food industry. You can't trust the dog food industry to watch out for your dog and the government is not your answer either.

This is unfortunate. The dog food industry was born in postwar America to meet a need....the need of business interests to recycle slaughterhouse and industrial waste. This refuse had potential uses as fertilizer, landfill and such, but a more profitable horizon existed in the packaging and selling this "junk" as food to unsuspecting dog owners. It is now a common misconception that your dog can not maintain a healthy life unless he is fed commercial dog food. Nothing could be further from the truth.

To save your dog's life, you may want to consider making your own homemade dog food. This is one of the best ways to guarantee your dog a healthy and safe diet.

Just glance at some of the regular ingredients delivered by rendering plants to  commercial  dog food manufacturers in the Unites States, Europe and worldwide.

o Euthanized dogs -Toxic chemicals such as Sodium Phenobarbital, the euthanizing agent injected to kill dogs daily at dog shelters. (This comes with the euthanized dog who is ground up at a rendering plant to be added to dog food. The dog may still be wearing a flea collar and be in a plastic bag when rendered )

o Blood

o Feathers

o Undeveloped eggs

o Downed, dying, diseased and dead animals  (Known as the 4Ds)

o Hooves, beaks, feet and hide

And a host of other unsavory, unhealthy and toxic products that will slowly kill or euthanize your dog with every feeding.

So what's the alternative? Well, if you are willing to spend a little time, and maybe even some money, there is a better way to feed your dog. You  can halt the daily toxification, provide needed nutrition and increase your dog's lifespan

What You Should Feed Your Dog

A variety of homemade dog food options  are available  for you to make your own dog food at home.
Some of these include completely natural dog food diets that are currently the rage with certain  dog nutrition experts such as The Bones and Raw Food,( BARF) diet also known as the  Biologically Appropriate Raw Food diet.

BARF Diets typically include a variety of uncooked foods such as :

o Bones with meat flesh attached

o Organs

o Muscle

o Eggs

o Fruit

o Yogurt

o Enzymes

o Herbs

o Vegetables

o Supplements and herbs

o Cereals

As to the preferred meat, there is none. BARF proponents use beef, chicken, goat, buffalo, whatever is fresh and available.

The same philosophy seems to exist for vegetables. Again the emphasis is on freshness, availability and variety.

While anecdotal tales of remarkable results are reported daily by BARFers, some veterinarians have found that BARF diets can be deficient in certain required nutrients. The inability to qualitatively analyze each prepared meal may account for these research results.

Vegetarian Homemade Dog Food Diets

Dogs, while primarily carnivores are also actually omnivores. In the wild, 10,000 years ago, dogs would take down their prey, and eat  not just the meat of the carcass but the contents of the stomach which included undigested grains, berries and grass.

This natural desire for a balanced diet suggests to many dog nutritionists that a vegetarian diet  containing sufficient protein sources is desirable. The advantage of a vegetarian diet is that disease and other health related issues can be avoided as well. Additionally, the philosophical objection of vegans to killing any animal as a food source  is accomplished.

Homemade Dog Food Vegetarian Diets include

o Bread

o Brown rice

o Sprouting grains

o Carrots

o Apples

o Dog biscuits

o Cottage cheese

o Eggs

o Lentils

o Baked beans

Make a Combo Homemade Dog Food Diet

o A Combo diet is in essence a blend of all philosophies and might include

o Meat

o Vegetables

o Eggs

o Brown Pasta

o Brown Rice

No matter which approach you choose for a homemade dog food diet there are a few pitfalls. One is the difficulty of preparing a properly balanced dog food diet with each batch.

The Whole Dog Journal states that a properly balanced dog food diet should include whole meat, vegetables, fruit, grain and high quality dietary fats.

Others suggest that the best alternative is to use a very high quality dog food that is natural, without preservatives, additives and the toxins that are found in many of the private and major kibble brands sold in retail outlets. These dog foods will typically cost quite a bit more than dog foods of lower quality, but guarantee a balanced diet for your dog .

If you do choose to prepare homemade dog food for your dog be certain to avoid certain foods which can be toxic and potentially fatal to your dog. These include but are not limited to avocado, raisins, grapes, and chocolate.

If the pros and cons, yin and yang, of the various approaches to making homemade dog food for your dog has your head spinning, don't despair. I have been researching this field for years and learn something new daily that confuses me even more.

There is a good way to get some perspective on this.
